Life insurance

What is a life insurance policy actually for?

A life insurance policy meets two quite different needs, often combined in a single contract.

Protect your family

If you die or become disabled, a lump sum is paid quickly to your family, without waiting for the estate to be settled. This is known as pure risk cover: you pay a modest premium, and the capital is paid only if the risk occurs.

Build up capital

Part of your premium can also be saved, to fund your retirement, a property purchase, or any other project. This is the savings component of the contract, often called an endowment policy.

Depending on your needs, one, the other, or both can take priority.

Why take out life insurance?

  • Your loved ones stay financially protected, whatever happens
  • You save in a disciplined way, without thinking about it every month
  • In pillar 3a, your premiums reduce your taxes every year
  • The capital paid on death generally falls outside the estate division and reaches your loved ones quickly
  • You can cover a loss of income in the event of illness or accident
